Maya could take care of herself, but what about Ed, Lilly, Frank, Jade, and everyone else. More importantly: he was leaving behind the concerns of the people he’d been working with. He’d personally set up a number of outposts where he could restock on ammo and which were trapped to keep the zombies. Spencer’s Mill was familiar–he’d spent the last few days learning the streets, the shortcuts, the places that would have some spare food or medical supplies. He was only a few minutes out of Spencer’s Mill, the little town that he and his group of survivors called home, when he first wondered if this was a mistake. Marcus Campbell was on the road to a new city.
I’m trying to remember any other game that’s made travel to a new area feel so dangerous and monumental. Hopefully that’ll get him through this mess he’s in now. All Frank’s got is Alcoholic, Drank a Lot, One-Time Jock, and Off the Wagon. Some characters are cooks or doctors or gardeners–the benefits of which should be clear. Other members of my crew have traits like “Physical Powerhouse,” which lets them carry more items, or “Loved Hiking,” which lets them increase the rate at which their Cardio and Wits (running and searching, respectively) improve.
While some of these characters are specifically authored by Undead Labs, most of them are procedurally generated from a set of possible traits and backgrounds and man, Frank got a rough draw on that one. When you die as a character, they’re gone forever, so it’s best to have a few extra on hand. This is important because each of them is mortal. Once you’re officially “friends” with someone, you can play as them. This is a game about scrounging for resources, careful exploration, and keeping a small crew of survivors from imploding because that one dude is a total prick.Īs your group grows and prospers, you gain trust with individuals you’ve recruited. SoD is an open world survival RPG set in a zombie filled, post-apocalyptic region of the northwestern US, and it leans heavily into that “survival” descriptor. And that’s why he’s crouching in a bush waiting for an egg timer to go off.Įven though Frank is one of the worst characters that I’ve been playing as in Undead Labs’ State of Decay, he’s also one of my favorites. Now that Marcus, the ad hoc leader of the group, was recuperating from a long scouting mission, it was time for Frank to start pulling his weight. As one of the camp’s newest recruits, he was expected to pitch in. He was an ex-college football star with a bum knee and a bald spot, and he knew that didn’t really bring much to the table.
