Really elegant solution, while you were able to have a wallpaper it was most of the time hidden behind the Program manager window. It had single icon on the desktop that opened "Program Manager", single normal window with shortcuts to all your programs. So are all software patents, and major part of all US patents.)īy the way, Win 3.1 didn't have a dock, a task bar or even a start menu. So whatever you think of Apple's way of doing business, at least they didn't _steal_ the dock, they bought it with the company that developed it. Apple bought NeXT in 1996, at the same time when Jobs returned to work for Apple. Probably you also know that the dock in OS X is a direct follower of the one used in NeXTstep (NeXT was founded by Steve Jobs).
So did OS/2, NeXTStep and Acorn Computers actually. Microsoft didn't have it, but 3rd party Windows interfaces did.
